HATE CRIMES

Amar Shergill has taken the lead on legal and political efforts on behalf of Sikh victims of hate crimes.  In November 2010, a West Sacramento cab driver was brutally assaulted by two men that shouted racial slurs during the attack.  The Shergill Law Firm represented the victim in meetings with the District Attorney and in media response.  After Amar Shergill successfully SONY DSCrallied community support, the assailants admitted their actions and were convicted of hate crimes. In March 2011, two Sikh grandfathers were shot and murdered during their daily afternoon stroll in Elk Grove.  Amar Shergill brought together civil rights and community organizations to raise over $50,000 for a reward and to show support for the Sikh community.  The firm also joined with others to organize political and civic leaders for a massive rally at the California Capitol.  Senator Darrell Steinberg led officials by wearing a turban and stating “We Are All Sikhs.”  The murders have not yet been solved and the reward is still outstanding.
